Access arrangements

As a qualified specialist in Educational Access Arrangements, I am trained to conduct assessments on behalf of educational institutions, as instructed by them.

What Are Access Arrangements?

Access arrangements are adjustments made to ensure that all candidates, regardless of any disability or learning difficulty, have a fair opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in exams. These arrangements are intended for students who have the ability to perform at the required level but face barriers in doing so due to conditions such as dyslexia or other learning challenges.

Common exam access arrangements may include:

  • Extra time

  • A reader

  • A scribe

  • Use of an exam reading pen, word processor, or assistive software

  • Exam papers printed on coloured paper

  • Supervised rest breaks

  • A separate or smaller room to take the exam in

These adjustments are designed to level the playing field and ensure that every candidate has the opportunity to perform to the best of their abilities.

Who is Eligible for Access Arrangements?

You don’t need a formal diagnosis, like dyslexia, to be eligible for access arrangements. What really matters is understanding a student’s individual needs in their day-to-day learning.

A diagnosis of dyslexia doesn’t automatically guarantee access arrangements—what counts is how the student’s needs present in their everyday classroom setting.

If an independent assessment is carried out without first involving the school, it can't directly lead to access arrangements, but it can provide helpful insights that can guide the school in making the right decisions.
